Last month we hosted our
#CookForUkraine Charity Dinner and are thrilled to announce that, with the help of our brilliant customers & suppliers, we were able to raise £1,500 for Slow Food Communities in Ukraine & a further £1,500 for the UNICEF UK Ukraine Appeal.
Today we were joined by Shane Holland, Executive Chair of Slow Food UK, who shared with us the current situation for farming in Ukraine.
Many of Ukraine’s farmers have been enrolled to join the resistance, meaning little is being planted, picked or produced. This presents a serious threat to Ukraine’s food security & sovereignty. The Slow Food organisation supports those farmers, food producers & cooks who have remained on the land to safeguard their crops & animals to provide critical food supplies to soldiers & citizens.
Beyond the human tragedy, the rich biodiversity & cultural heritage of Ukraine is under threat. One of the core missions of Slow Food is to save biodiversity - the urgency of which becomes more apparent in wartime, where rare animal breeds & crop varieties could easily be wiped out forever.
