At Darts Farm, we believe that truly great food begins beneath our feet—with healthy, living soil. The journey from field to flour isn’t just about producing wheat; it’s about nurturing the land, preserving traditional farming methods, and championing a more sustainable way of growing. In today's blog, we take a closer look at why the right flour matters and how we can all be part of the change!
Starts with the soil...
Soil is a vital part of our environment. It allows plants to grow, holds and cleans water, recycles nutrients, and provides a home for a multitude of organisms on Earth. Plants derive their nutrients from the soil, and we derive our nutrients from plants.
Depleted soil leaves plants, and ultimately human and animal life that eat plants, lacking in vital nutrients, ultimately affecting our skin, overall health, and well-being.
The problem...
At the end of most supply chains are growers that are forced to choose yield, uniformity and shelflife — the modern markers of quality in food production — over flavour. This pursuit has created an industry dominated by hybrid and GMO seeds grown as monocrops, heavily mechanised processes and the excessive use of fertilisers and pesticides. The result: depleted soil, ecosystem and human health.
Soil focused farming for better wheat...
“If the crops your eating have been kept alive using chemicals, then that’s what’s in your loaf of bread. We’ve got to grow our food using biology instead of chemistry. That means soil, plants and animals all interacting together” – Andy Cato, Wildfarmed.
Over the years, we’ve built an exceptional community of like-minded farmers and growers who share our obsession for producing food that nourishes the planet & ourselves too. They grow wheat the right way, transforming depleted UK farmland into thriving fields full of life. Promoting heritage grains - varieties that have adapted over generations to be more resilient to their growing conditions. Thanks to their deep root systems, heritage crops can access more nutrients than modern varieties. And, unlike genetically identical wheat planted today, a heritage wheat field will do well in a bad weather year because of its genetic diversity. They are highly nutritious, very tasty & climate resilient.
Through farming regeneratively they are increasing biodiversity, soil health, water retention, long term yield & more nutritious crops, whilst reducing the need for artificial inputs & soil erosion.
Our suppliers...

How can you help?
When someone buys real flour; they’re not just buying wheat. They’re supporting farming that improves soil health, crop resilience, grain nutrition and, ultimately, results in more flavourful food, helping to sustain a way of growing and eating that’s better for all of us!
For us, nothing says Spring like a delicious lamb roast accompanied by minted, seasonal veg and garlic butter new potatoes!
A super exciting announcement!
